Bottle jacks are fairly compact devices that can lift impressive weights. That is why most motorists prefer this type of lifting device. A vertical bottle jack is standard for crossovers and SUVs, but it can also be used for cars and trucks.
How to choose a jack for your car
Jacks of this type got their name because of their external resemblance to a bottle. Vertical lifting devices are equipped with a telescopic extension part: in double-rod jacks the maximum lifting height is greater than in single-rod jacks.
The jacks also differ in the type of drive:
- Mechanical (screw)Actuated by muscle force when rotating or pressing the handle hard. The lifting capacity of mechanical bottle jacks does not exceed 2 tons.
- Hydraulic require significantly less labor effort. When you press the handle, oil is pumped to the piston, and the created pressure pushes out the telescopic mechanism. Hydraulic bottle jacks have a high lifting capacity (up to 100 tons).
If you are planning to buy a bottle jack for your car, a hydraulic model will be the best solution. In addition to a higher lifting capacity, the lifting mechanism is characterized by a smoother ride and high efficiency.
The only downside is the special transportation requirements. To prevent hydraulic fluid from leaking, the lifting mechanism must be stored and transported strictly vertically. But if you strictly adhere to the storage conditions, change the gaskets and seals on time, and monitor the condition of the jack, it is guaranteed to last for many years. It will also make it much easier to change a wheel or carry out light repairs that require lifting the car.
